In a galaxy far, far away — fashion is more than a statement, it defines what side you're on. The remarkable costumery of the Star Wars saga is headed to our very own galaxy.
Star Wars and the Power of Costume will display original garb from the first seven films from May 20 through Sept. 30 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Queen Amidala, Yoda, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, Han Solo, X-wing Pilots and Droids, including C-3PO and R2-D2 are among the 60 featured costumes.
“This exhibition allows visitors to explore the creative processes behind the art of costume design while discovering the unexpected ways in which these works relate to art from the DIA’s collection,” Salvador-Salort-Pons the DIA director says of the exhibit.
Star Wars and the Power of Costume will explore the creative process through intricate sketches and full documentation on how Darth Vadar's menacing armor came to be and the fashion evolution of Princess Leia. Visitors will also have an opportunity to view videos featuring designers, actors, and concept artists to better shed some light and dark on how a team of creatives turned a concept into fantasy and eventually into reality.
The museum will operate with extended hours Thursdays through Sundays in honor of the exhibition. DIA members can see the exhibition for free and can reserve tickets beginning March 15.
