Fun fact: When Tarantino first released Reservoir Dogs in 1992, he wasn’t the acclaimed director he is today. In fact, among the first major press Reservoir Dogs got was a cover story in Detroit's Orbit Magazine — the now long-defunct culture magazine that graces our cover this week.
The reason we decided to bring Metro Times' former rivals back from the dead? The excellent new Orbit Magazine Anthology, which comes out Sept. 1 on Wayne State University Press. The Tarantino-Orbit connection is one of the many stories author Robert St. Mary wrangled out of the magazine's staffers "before their collective memories rot any further."
Apparently Tarantino was thrilled for the coverage — and for his next project, Pulp Fiction, he decided to return the favor. If you look closely in the chapter with Jimmy and the Wolf, Tarantino can be seen wearing an "Orby" t-shirt under his robe.
In pleasant coincidence, Pulp Fiction gets a rare, one-night screening at Detroit's historic Redford Theatre this weekend. The show starts at 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. Tickets are $5 to see this cinematic masterpiece of crime, black comedy, and basically every trick Tarantino can pull.
