Here comes Detroit's Christmas tree

We've not yet celebrated All Hallow's Eve, but Detroit's Christmas tree has already been selected and a ceremony to raise it is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 1.

The 60-foot Norwegian spruce was grown in Cadillac and will arrive at Campus Martius Wednesday morning when a team will set it atop the Woodward Fountain via crane.

An event will be held starting at 12:15 p.m. during which the tree will be raised and Robert Gregory, the chief public spaces officer at Downtown Detroit Partnership, DTE Energy vice president Faye Nelson, and Detroit chief of Staff Alexis Wiley will offer remarks.

The ceremony is a precursor of sorts to the beloved Christmas Tree Lighting celebration that takes place in Campus Martius every year. That event will take place on Friday, Nov. 17 and will include ice skating, live music, and a beer tent, among other attractions.

Between Nov. 1 and 17, workers will decorate the towering tree with 19,000 lights and a smattering of larger-than-life ornaments that will adorn the tree until its taken down in early 2018.
