Greektown will be a-buzzing with pride this weekend for the 16th annual Greek Independence Day parade. The parade is on Sunday, but Saturday is a gala to raise funds at the Detroit Athletic Club for the Hellenic Museum of Michigan. The parade committee encouraged locals of Hellenic heritage to build floats, march, and participate in the parade back in January, so expect some stellar visuals and plenty of Mediterranean pride.
Greektown was registered as a historic district in 1982 and like the Greek festivals that started in the 60s, this parade is a strong cultural indicator of Detroit’s Greek population. The celebration on Sunday begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Annunciation Cathedral for the Liturgy and Hierarchical Doxology. At 1:30 p.m. the pre-parade ceremony takes place and the parade itself starts at 3:00 p.m.
