On any given day the Detroit Institute of Art is transportive. In a series of special events leading up to the museum’s unveiling of its newly expanded Asian art galleries in November, the DIA will host a free two-day Taiwan festival to give gallery-goers another stamp in their passport.
The festival will include film screenings, performances, cooking demonstrations, and arts and craft workshops. Visitors can tour Taiwan through interactive maps, ward off evil by making door god posters, learn how to make authentic pork dumplings, or just soak in the sounds of the National Chinese Orchestra and the Ann Arbor Chinese Traditional Music Ensemble.
The Taiwan Festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16 at the DIA; 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-833-7900; dia.org; Event is free with museum admission.
