Detroit's popular Times Square-style New Year's Eve event known as "The Drop" has been canceled for its 2019 edition, an event spokeswoman confirms to Metro Times.
The spokeswoman says organizers decided to pull the plug due to logistics.
In a statement, Mooney writes:
We launched The DROP in 2010 to draw attention to the city’s indestructible spirit and grit, and to-date have been tremendously successful. From our inaugural year we have grown our revelers looking to celebrate the coming new year in Detroit at The DROP — from an unexpected crowd of 3,000 at our inaugural event in 2010 to crowds exceeding 30,000 people. We have certainly caught national attention and media acclaim and we thank ALL OF YOU that have attended year after year.
Now, nearly a decade later with the city’s mounting revival, downtown Detroit is awash with activity that make event logistics and timing for our ever-growing celebration an issue of concern. Offering the public, a premium entertainment experience in a fun, safe environment has always been the guiding principles for The DROP so that is why we feel focusing on Motor City NYE — The DROP 2020 will allow us to meet, and surpass, the high standards you’ve come to expect.
Founded in 2009, the free event was held in Campus Martius Park for seven years before moving to DTE Energy's Beacon Park. Like the world-famous NYC ball drop, the Motor City event celebrated the New Year by lowering a glowing ball at midnight — in this case, festooned with a "D."
Organizers estimated as many as 35,000 attended the event when it was last held at Campus Martius.
There are lots of other ways to celebrate NYE in Detroit, however. (An early
NYE Kids Countdown will be still be held at Beacon Park from 1-6 p.m.) We'll be adding events to this list as we find them, and you can find NYE listings in our final two print issues of 2018.
