Whether you have yet to see Marvel's instant classic Black Panther or you're a comic book die-hard who has seen it, like, a billion times already, you're in luck — the Detroit Institute of Arts will offer free screenings of the film this month.
The museum will show it at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 and Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Detroit Film Theatre. The screenings are free with museum admission, which is already free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties as well as DIA members. Otherwise, it's $14 for adults, $8 for college students, and $6 for ages 6 through 17. Seating is on a first-come,
The screenings are part of the museum's "Summer Sci-Fi series" which has shown classic and influential sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure films. The program coincides with the museum's Star Wars and the Power of Costume exhibition, on view through Sept. 30.
Based on a comic book character that debuted in 1966, Black Panther drew praise for its Afrofuturist storyline and designs. Black luminaries like journalist Jemele Hill and rapper Tee Grizzley rented out entire theaters so that Detroit schoolchildren could see the movie for free when it first came out earlier this year.
