Detroit is a hotbed of creativity. Nationally recognized music, art, and film are made here, but fashion design has never been one of our biggest exports, despite the number of talented individuals that live, work, and create here.
Karen Buscemi, former StyleLine editor and founder of the Detroit Garment Group, has long hoped to shed more light on local fashion design as well as to help burgeoning designers hone both their creative and business skills. She started a day-long conference called Fashion Speak, which brings together five experts from various aspects of the design field. These speakers share their know-how in 70-minute workshops that all reflect back on the business of fashion.
This year's Fashion Speak event takes place on Thursday, Oct. 15. Of the five speakers, Detroit native Kevan Hall is set to headline. Hall's contributions to fashion are many and he's received such honors as the Peacock Award for Outstanding Fashion Design and Life & Styles's Stylemaker of the Year. The NAACP even named him the Great American Fashion Designer. He's dressed celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Selma Hayak, Charlize Theron, and Michelle Obama.
Other speakers include Detroit Sewn's Kristen Deryck and Detroit is the New Black's Roslyn Karamoko. A commercial bankers will also speak as well as representatives from Taubman.
Fashion Speak takes place at The Beacon at One Woodward in Detroit from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 and include all workshops, a continental breakfast, and access to the after party. For more info check out detroitgarmentgroup.org.
