Designer Tracy Reese honors Detroit roots at NY fashion week

New York Fashion Week is in full swing and Detroit darling Tracy Reese is showing her hometown some love with her latest collection. 

"It's a city that is so rich in culture," said Reese, who is a Cass Tech alum. "It has such amazing people who have stuck with that town through thick and thin. We're sort of at an interesting juncture where the city is changing a lot and there is new interest and a lot of new blood. People are moving to Detroit because they know they can be a part of creating something amazing." 

She steered clear of the typical runway show, opting to debut the collection with a nine-minute film titled A Detroit Love Song, directed by Ali Nasser with original music by Regina Carter. The film's main character, played by a model from Detroit who caught Reese's eye, dons items from the new line while cruising around the city, landing in familiar places to Detroiters, like the legendary Red's Jazz Shoe Shine Parlor. 

Reese paid homage to Detroit with her line as well. Described as "deeply personal and nostalgic" by Vogue, the line draws inspiration from Detroit's manufacturing roots, its rebirth, and ever-evolving identity.
