The Detroit Institute of Arts is a museum. It goes without saying that it's a physical building that offers a collection of painting, sculpture, and other visual art for view. But it also offers arts that don't just sit there: It draws viewers to the Detroit Film Theatre for a selection of classics and cutting-edge motion pictures. It offers a series of musical performances much of the year.

But what about dance? Well, fans of the performing arts, mark your calendars for Sunday, April 17. That's when a program of dance will take over various parts of the museum. From morning into the evening, performances of and discussions about dance will take place. It starts at 11 a.m. with a "Dance Chance" event in the Great Hall. Detroit’s ARTLAB J as they explore dance created by a special procedure that gets the audience involved. At 1 p.m., Dance Now Detroit will take over the Rivera Court, with performances by Compañeros de Flamenco, Tableau Cadre Movement Ensemble, Na Wahine O Ke Anuenue, Wild Spirit Dance and Dance Nonce. At 3:30 p.m., the Lecture Hall will be given over to a discussion of black dance and the Harlem Renaissance.

There will be more, of course. Check the DIA website as things go forward.
