“Some things melt before they become memories,” artist, author, and poet Patti Smith says in her latest book, Devotion. Smith’s tapestry of memories is a rich one, and much of her source material is the intricacies and difficulties of feeling love. In 2010, she delivered Just Kids — the hauntingly descriptive tale of her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. It was 2015’s M Train that gave insight into her marriage with the late Fred “Sonic” Smith and her life in Michigan. In Devotion, Smith offers a glimpse into the alchemy of her art, her creative process, and the love that is required to create.
