Palmer Woods Music In Homes is presenting a rare chance tonight to catch an Afro-Cuban musical performance in the garden of a Minuro Yamasaki-designed home in Palmer Woods.
Yamasaki is most famous for designing the World Trade Center, but locally he's behind modernist masterpieces like the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company Building, Temple Beth El, Wayne State University's Prentis Building, and WSU's McGregor Memorial Conference Center.
In Palmer Woods, Yamasaki designed the S. Brooks and Florence Barron House, of which Michigan Modern writes:
Concealed behind landscaping and a low brick wall is the S. Brooks and Florence Barron House, designed by Minoru Yamasaki. To an admirer from the street, it reveals only a low-pitched roof gable, a brick facade, and a few windows. This is typical of Yamasaki's residential commissions. Like his other houses, most of the beauty of this structure lies in the way its interior space unfolds from within.

The performance by Orquesta La Inspiracion will include the beats of salsa, merengue, cumbia and Afro-Caribbean jazz, and will take place in a tent in the home's garden. Festivities include a Mexican-style feast, including Sangria and desserts.
Palmer Woods Music In The Park says Orquesta La Inspiracion is "founded by Puerto Rican congera Ozzie Rivera and under the musical direction of pianist/composer Bill Meyer, is a large ensemble of some of the Detroit area’s most talented and knowledgeable musicians, who were either born in the Caribbean or Central America, or have been immersed in the sounds and flavor of Latin music for much of their lives."
