A violinist turned children’s book author with an Emmy Award? Yeah, musician Damien Escobar is a rare bird. Escobar was the youngest student ever accepted into the Juilliard School of Music at the age of 10. Fast-forward to 2009 and Escobar’s trio Nuttin’ but Stringz came in third place on America’s Got Talent and performed at the first inauguration of President Barack Obama. The Queens, New York native is now a solo artist. Escobar has not only made the violin cool again, but has given it new life with a theatrical energy all his own.

Damien Escobar will perform at Royal Oak Music Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 10; 318 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak; 248-399-2980; royaloakmusictheatre.com; doors open at 7 p.m.; tickets start at $45.
