Metro Times invites you to show off your talent. Every year we hold a summer contest for fiction and poetry, and publish the winners in a special issue of the paper.

This year we’re offering a new category: McOndo for Americans. Named after Gabriel García Márquez’s fictional village Macondo in One Hundred Years of Solitude, "McOndo" is the moniker for a Latin American literary trend of urban realism drunk on pop culture. It’s as intense as life can get for the television watching, I-Pod wearing, video game-playing, label-conscious generation. So string together a story about how you found and later sold your soulmate on eBay, and dare to make us care about it. Entries to this category can come in the form of flash or short fiction.

Rules: Submit three photocopies of each entry. DO NOT put your name on the entries. Write a letter of the alphabet of your choice on each copy of your entry and put the same letter on a cover letter. On the cover letter, write your name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Do not send original manuscripts; they will not be returned. Keep a copy of your entry on a disk or on your home computer so that it can be e-mailed for publication should you win. Include $5 with each entry; make check or money order out to *Metro Times*. Do not send cash. First-, second- and third-place winners for each category will be selected. A selection of winners will be published in the July 27 special Summer Fiction Issue of *Metro Times* (both online and in print) and one winner will be awarded the opportunity to attend the seventh annual Walloon Writers’ Retreat, Sept. 22-25 on Walloon Lake. The extended weekend event offers new and established poets and writers the opportunity to attend workshops, readings and panel discussions. Entries that do not follow the rules will be disqualified.

Flash Fiction

Take the challenge: Tell the best story in 150 words or less (rule strictly enforced). Limit 3 flash fiction entries per person; each story will be judged separately.

Short fiction

Short stories and excerpts from novels, not to exceed 2,500 words. One entry per person.

Poetry

Give us your best, not to exceed 500 words. No more than two entries per person.
