Bert's Warehouse in Eastern Market was packed to the rafters Sunday for Day Three of the 2021 Metro Detroit Golden Gloves boxing tournament. Recently released after 48 years in prison for a murder he and his supporters insist he did not commit, Detroit artist and former Golden Gloves boxing champion Ray Gray was honored with a championship belt at intermission.
We also spotted former boxing champs Milton McCrory and Tony Harrison at ringside, as well as the up-and-coming Zahraa Alakashi, a Dearborn native born to Iraqi nationals in a Saudi Arabian refugee camp. Alakashi, who entered the ring in a Nike-emblazoned hijab, made quick work of her opponent, dispatching Michelle Njuguna with a first-round TKO.
