These metro Detroit spots serve delicious paczki for Fat Tuesday

Get your stretchy pants ready, Fat Tuesday, aka Paczki Day, is coming.

This gluttonous tradition falls on Feb. 21 this year, and though we may have lost the beloved New Martha Washington Bakery, there are still plenty of options for your jelly-filled fix. You know the drill: Hamtramck is ground zero for paczki, so get in line at your favorite Polish bakeries early or place an order in advance before they sell out.

However, you aren’t limited to Hamtramck, as plenty of shops around metro Detroit offer the indulgent treat. Here’s where to find paczki in metro Detroit, from classic flavors to creative fillings, and even some vegan options.

Maryrose Moses is now operating Side Eye Pie in the former New Martha Washington Bakery, which was recently acquired by next-door Dos Locos Tacos. As a former pastry chef for DonutSlut Chicago, Moses is joining the Paczki Day festivities this year, presenting three classic flavors (Bavarian cream with chocolate glaze, raspberry, and apricot) and three speciality flavors (PB&J with chipotle raspberry jelly, Mexican chocolate, and strawberries and cream). The treats will be available starting at 5 a.m. on Fat Tuesday.

The Union Joints restaurant group announced the return of its “Paczki Madness” promotion where customers pick their favorite paczki in a bracket-style voting competition on social media. Flavors include Snap, Crackle, and Pop (chocolate and marshmallow filling); Bourbon Pecan Pie; Chatcha (cherry filling with matcha icing); and Kicked in the Mango. “Old School” offerings include riffs on classics like Raspberry Hibiscus, Vanilla Cardamom Custard, Lemon Poppyseed, and Chocolate Coffee. Orders are now available and can be picked up from Berkley’s Vinsetta Garage, Troy’s Gran Castor, Ann Arbor’s Union Rec, and Clarkston’s Honcho.
