Stir It Up
Boys in the hoodies
The merits of the case aside, what do we tell our black children?

Some people say an unclear section of the tape is Zimmerman saying, "Fucking coons."
The national uproar over the police handling of the case has moved the inquiry into the incident into a more just direction. Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee announced he will step down "temporarily" because his presence has become a distraction. In response to a reporter's question President Obama called the incident a tragedy, and said we should investigate "every aspect of this" and "If I had a son he would look like Trayvon." The president called on Americans to do some "soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen."
I'm doing some soul-searching. As a parent of a black teenager, albeit a female, there are plenty of dangers out there for me to be concerned about, and this adds another brick to the pile of worries. I wonder how much of that burden to put on her young shoulders.
In the meantime, I've signed the petition at change.org calling for the prosecution of Zimmerman. As of Friday it had 1.5 million signatures. I'm making a sign to pin to my hoodie. It simply says, "Trayvon."
