At its most basic, an artist's book is one that's viewed as a piece of art in and of itself. As a genre, the artist's book has come into its own in the last few decades, but its origins are often cited as the eighteenth century, when artists such as William Blake inserted multiple prints into a book of text, creating a new relationship between image and word. The Art of the Artist's Book features works in a range of media, from the obvious paper and paint to the more unconventional magnetic sheeting, steel and clay, showcasing the various forms, styles and meanings that the term "artist's book" can encompass. Twenty artists contributed pieces, including Kara Walker, who works with printers and bookbinders to create "deluxe book" editions of her work; Michael E. Smith, who appropriates existing books for his art; and Donald Lipski, who uses books to create three-dimensional works. The Art of the Artist's Book displays through April 4 at the Oakland University Art Gallery, 2200 N. Squirrel Rd., Rochester; 248-370-2100. [more]

Asia — China in particular — is closely associated with ceramics; for thousands of years, Asian potters have been creating vessels of utilitarian and aesthetic value, developing revolutionary firing and glazing techniques hundreds of years before Europeans. Breaking the Mold: Contemporary Japanese and Chinese Ceramic Sculpture features contemporary Japanese and Chinese artists who are both continuing and subverting the ceramics traditions of their countries. The seven Chinese ceramists have created works that comment on China's relationship with the West and on China's current social issues. The Japanese works come from nine artists, some of whom are working in traditional forms and others who are bucking traditions and creating works influenced by comic books, pop art and animation. At the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, 480 W. Hancock, Detroit; 313-993-7813; on display through April 23. [more]
