Atwater Brewery's beer is among some of the best in the world, according to the Wold Expo of Beer.

The Brewery's namesake beer, the Atwater Lager, won first place honors in the light lager and pilsner categories at the World Expo of Beer, which took place in May.

The competition, held in Frankenmuth, is Michigan's only international competitive beer event. Atwater won over more than 566 entries from 70 different breweries.

“Unlike other styles of beer where you have very complex flavor profiles with different ingredients competing for your palate, lagers require a high flavor purity and absolute smoothness of body," Atwater owner Mark Reith said. "The beauty of the lager – and the difficulty in brewing it correctly - lies in its simplicity. All the flavors come through, as well as the color and clarity, so it needs to be perfectly balanced.”

But the accolades don't end there. Atwater's Cash for Gold and Purple Gang Pilsner each took home third place honors.

“We brew lagers in an authentic process, a new Atwater tradition consistent with German style heritage dating back hundreds of years," Reith said.

The award-winning lagers are avaliable at most craft beer retailers, or at one of Atwater's two locations

"With lagers continuing as the nation’s fastest growing craft beer segment, it feels like the market is coming our way, and winning beer competitions is an important endorsement,” Reith said.
