It all started late last year when Brooklyn's Galapagos Art Space announced it was moving to Detroit. A post on Galapagos' website at the time had said, "You can’t paint at night in your kitchen and hope to be a good artist. It doesn’t work that way.”
That line offended one Detroit artist so much he penned a blistering blog post about it. In fact, the idea that New York's art scene was going to descend on Detroit's scrappy art scene and impose its East Coast values was as loud and nasty as it was premature.
But, as with everything from pop stars to Packard Plant tigers these days, at least a good T-shirt has come out of it. (Full disclosure: It was produced by my girlfriend, Rachel Timlin.)
It reads "I paint in my kitchen. At night. Fuck off." It was custom-made for publisher and academic Vince Carducci, who is pictured below, modeling the garment.
Carducci tells us, "I used to love Galapagos when it was in Williamsburg. And I am sure the guy means well. But Detroit ain't Brooklyn. As someone once said, 'Lord save us from reformers.'"
