Pope invites Patti Smith to perform at Vatican Christmas concert for some reason, protest obviously ensues

This December, bishops, cardinals, and even the Pope will rock the fuck out to Patti Smith, who has been invited by said Pope to play at the annual Vatican Christmas concert, Concerto di Natale, on Dec. 13. The concert will be held in Rome's Conciliation Auditorium located just outside the Vatican and will be broadcast on live TV.
Smith, of course, famously added her own line on her cover of Them's "Gloria" — "Jesus died for somebody's sins/But not mine." For this reason, some Catholics aren't cool with the decision to include Smith on the bill, with the organization Portosalvo protesting what they say is a "blasphemous" event. But isn't the Pope supposed to be infallible? This is so confusing. (I never was good at the whole Catholic thing.)
In recent years, though, Smith has played nice with religion. She penned a lullaby for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, and told The Independent about her love of the bible:
“The bible is very resonant. It has everything, creation, betrayal, lust, poetry, prophecy, sacrifice. All great things are in the bible and all great writers have drawn from it and more than people realise, whether Shakespeare, Herman Melville or Bob Dylan. Of course there are stories that are still relevant and inspiring; lessons that need to be taught over and over again. And they give people hope. It doesn't really matter what religion you are or if you have no religion, those stories are still relevant to what people go through in their lives and they're also beautifully written passages.”
A quick look at the full bill on the concert's website seems to indicate that Smith is, by far, the only remotely controversial choice.
